The first football season was a tough one for the Eagles, who consolidated 1A Anderson Creek, Boone Trail and Benhaven High Schools. Anderson Creek had not had a football program and Benhaven’s was a relatively new one. Boone Trail was the only high school with recent success coming into the new school year. The team practiced in a cow pasture about 2 miles from the school and played their home games at Boone Trail High School. The Eagles struggled and only scored 9 total points, all against Orange High School.

The Eagles finally got in the win column during year 3 in school history by defeating Fairmont 22-0 in the opener. Billy Thomas had 126 rushing yards and 2 touchdowns in the win. However this would be the only win of the season for Western as they lost their next 9 games to finish 1-9, including a 6-0 loss to rival Harnett Central.

The Eagles 1981 season was another disappointing one but the Eagles beat rival Harnett Central for the first time in school history with a 26-20 win.

The Eagles 1982 season was much improved from previous years. For the first time, Western won multiple games in a season. It was also the first time Western defeated Durham Jordan and Apex. The Eagles beat Durham Jordan 12-7 before beating Apex 6-0 on a Nathan Bell touchdown pass to Van Stepney in the 4th Quarter. The Eagles tied Union Pines before losing 3 straight. The Eagles then defeated rival Harnett Central in the finale for the most wins in school history at the time.

The Eagles lost to some tough competition in 1983 but beat Union Pines 26-25 on an Al Upchurch QB run with 40 seconds left. Upchurch had 3 rushing touchdowns, which was a school record at the time. Western ended the season with a 27-0 rout of Harnett Central. Reggie Murchison connected on Western’s first ever Field Goal during that game.

The 1999 season, led by Travis Conner, is one of the most successful teams in school history. The Eagles went 10-2 and had a chance in both losses in the 4th quarter. Western started off 6-0 and included the ESPN NFL Films featuring the Notre Dame Box Offense. The Eagles had over 10 players sign to play at the next level including Clarence Gaddy, who was named NC Gatorade Player of the Year. The 1999 scored the most points in a single season than any other team in school history and was the first of two 10 win seasons.

The Eagles put together another 10 win season behind All-State Running Back Clifton McKoy. The Eagles only lost to Southern Durham twice as well as a heartbreaker to Fuquay-Varina. This would be the last 3A season before jumping to 4A the next four years. Western got big wins over rivals Lee County and Harnett Central as well as an Overtime thriller at Clayton. Coach Travis Conner would move on following the season and assistant Bill Wyrick would take over.
